TELEGRAPHIC MATCH COMMENCiEiD ON SATURDAY FULL REPORT NEXT WEEK

( Sneciallv written for the "Morning

Post" (by

The telegraphic match with the Gisborne Club for the Blackburn Cup wias commenced on last Saturday evening, and after five hours play the number of.moves made by each side would average about twenty per board. From every point of view, the arrangements made were excellent; the officials, headed by Mr. W. L. .Richards, all doing their work quickly, and efficiently, andj from the prayers' peint of view, leaving nothing to be desired. Rotorua were slightly unluckly to lose the toss, but this does not appear to have affected the players much. From a brief .survey of the boards at the adjournment, it appears that the local side has 'an advantage at the majority of the boards — there are four certain wins — and at most of the other boards there is a slight advantage in position, while at no board iis there a certain loss. At this stage it is obvious thiat in fairness to the Gisborne Gluib no comments can be made on the play at individual boards, but all players should remember that Rotorua has the adr vantag-e and should hold it. The play on next Siaturday evening will be more critical than that on the first evening, and no rash moves should be made. If a forced win cannot be made, watch carefully the prospects for a draw, and think out each move carefully. Do not move the pieces about. The Rotorua "tail" as wagging very strongly, and a win at board 12 counts as much as a win at board 1. The match will be concluded next Saturday evening, and any games not agreed upon as wins, losses, or dnaws, by both sides, will be forwarded to Wellington for adjudication. A full report of the match will be given in this column next Wednesday. Next Friday evening will be devoted to friendly games and ladder games where memlbers so desire.
