HOCKEY TOURNtY ROTORUA A'$SN. QUESTION. explanAtion OF ' N.ZAV.H.A. "STAR CHAMBER METHODS" D&satisfaction iii regard to the reason given hy the New Zealand Wo- • meri's Hockey Association for the' ailocation to Dannevirke of tlie arinual Dominion tour-nament was expressed" last nig.ht at a meeting of the Ro- ' torua Ladies' Hockey Association. In ofiicially reporting thlat the application of Rotorua had been unsuc-, eessful the seeretary, Mr. C.'J. £asey also read an explanation from the N.Z.W.H.A. of the reason why»the ap_ ^ plication was refused. This letter stat- • ed that as the piast Wo tourneys heid sn tlie North Island hadj taken place at Gisborne in 1929 and Auckland in 1931, the executive considered that Dannevirke was the more central venue for the tourney this year. This explanation was generally considered tas unsatisfactorv hv the mein-

•bers present, Mr. A. C. Watts stating that last year the action of the associating in alloeating the tourney to Dunedin showed i'nconsistency on the part of the controlld'ng hody. As justificarion for this, he said that although the two previous tourneys 'in the South Island had been held at Invercargill arid Timaru, the association in considering last year's alloeation had overlooked strong claims hy Marlborough and .sekcted Dunedin for thetournament. On that occasion therefore the controlling executive had not seen fit to select the more central town. . Aims of Tourney Continuing/Mr. Watts said that he understood that it was in an endeaVour to stiriiulate interest in the game that the annual tourneys were inaugurated and that if this were so, "Rotorua should have received consideration before Dannevirke where the game was fully established and commanded eoiisiderable support. As a new association Rotorua would havb derived much benefit from the tourney and a fillip given to the game in the town. Mr. Casey considered that as Rotorua had m/ore corisistently applied'for the fixture of late years, its applicatiori should have received priority over that of th'e Ruahine Association. Ruahine had also failed to he repr'esente'd, at recent tourneys in the South Island whereas;' Rbtprua had attended those at Invercargill and Timaru. It wa's an undisputable fact, conti'nued tlie speaber, that of recent years interest in the tourneys had heen waning as "evidenced by a xemit at the last annual meeting to h'old annual tournaments in the North and South Isla'ftd each year. He considered that had Rotorua been chosen this year much of this declining interest would have been ■ arrested owing to the attraetions which' players would find to interest them in Rotorua. Merely an Excuse Quoting the letter frorii .thie N.Z. W.H.A. as more of an excuse thari ari explanation, Mw Casey said it wbuld he interes.ting to kriow why, under these cireumstanees, the date of alloeation had heen defe'rred from the meeting of June 5 until Ju'ne 15 under the pretext of the'want of more iiiformation. The unreasonalble attitude of the controlling association in many other matters, such as the alloeation o'f the ' tourney at the precedirig tourney, was also discussed and the opinion expressed that too mnch authority was vested in the hands of a small hand of officials in Wellington. ' It was decided to iristruct the seeretary to congratulate the Ruahine Association on its- success and also to send a letter of protest to the New Zealand Association at the unsatisfactory nature of its explanation.
