SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS MADE IN CHRISTCHURCH
— By Telegraph — Copyright).
Christchurch, Tuesday. Serious allegations against the conduct of some saletand-purchase "tenants" of workers' dwelliiigs owned by the Christchurch City Council were made by members of the. Housing sub-committee at a meeting of the council. Powers were taken by the council to resume possession of any hoUses where the ownei's were considerd unsatisfactory, but it was made clear that these powers would not he used where a genuine attempt was being made by the owners to meet their obligations. It was reported that' many owners of dwellings were in arrears and were not making a reasonable effort to pay the instalments. One tenant disappeared, taking the electric range and blinds. Others had left, sub-le.tting the houses, and had failed to pay the money to the council. Altogether, the arrears amounted to £3000.
