COMMISSIONER TO VISIT THE MANDATED ISLANDS

Wellington, Monday. To make a personal inspection of the state of the public service in the mandated territory of Western Samoa and Niue Islands, the Puhlic Service Commissioner, Mr. P. Verschafelt, and the S'ecretary for External Affairs, Mr. Berendsen, will leave by the Maui Pomare on Wednesday. They will be absent from the Dominion for about seven weeks. and are due back on August 8. During Mr. Berendsen's absence, Mr. A. B. Ross, of the Internal Affairs Department will act as Secretary of External Affairs. Mr. A. D. Thomson will act as Puhlic Service Commissioner. Mr. Thomson was Assistant Public Service Commissioner from 1913 to 1920, retiring from the Public Service in the latter year. At one time Mr. Thomson was stipendiary magistrate at Palmerston North from 1903 to 1912. Previous to his appointment to the bench he was in the Justice Department.
