WEEK-END GAMES THIRD SERIES OF MATCHES COMPLETED LAST SATURDAY MEETING OF EXECUTIVE
(B5
The third series of games played under the auspices of the Rotorua Basketball Association were completed last Saturday. Teams are gradually settling down for the season and a higher standard of play has resulted. H.S.O.S. A again scored, defeating Kowhai by 12 goals. Definite teamwork by the victors gave Kowhai few chances to shine, the Old Students' defence giving the forwards few opportunities for easy shots at goal. Once again, however, Kowhai were handicapped by heing one player short. The Old Students' forwards were in good form and their goal shooting was most accurate. E. Clarke (O.S.), and D. Emeny (K), played well and were always ready when required. The score was H.S. O.S. A 20, Kowhai 3. Mrs. I. Shearer was the referee. Huia v. H.S.O.S. B Huia gained their first championship points • by defeating the Old Students' B team by the narrow margin of one point. Old Students, fielding a player short, had the best of the game in the first spell, their field work being faster and surer than their opponents. Y. Ford and J. Tucker (Old Stu-
dents' forwards) eludmg their three defenders, combined well together and in the first half oLthe game scored six goals against Huia's two. At the commencement of play Huia rearranged their team combinatiwa, and their play improved considerably. It was not long before they evened the score and the game at this stage hecame very exciting, first one team scoring and then the other. Old Students' defence put up a strong fight, but Huia's forward combination and goal shooting proved too accurate and they shot the winning goal just beforfe the call of time. Huia 10, H.S.O.S. B 9. Mrs. E. Guy was the referee. Through resignations in the club, Ngongotaha have of late been unable to field the required number of players to form a team. As the vacancies had not been filled last week they were, unfortunately, obliged to default to Waratah. Executive Meeting A meeting of the executive committee was held recently. Those present included, Mrs. Managb (president), Mrs. E. Guy, Mrs. Shearer, Miss Street and a delegate from each team. A letter was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Basketball Association, enquiring if Rotorua would link up with them. After discussion it was unanimously decided to affiliate. Upon a verbal application permission was granted Aotea to run a club tournament on conditions that such tournament be confined strictly to their own teams. The dance committee advised satisfactory progress. The three referees, Mrs. E. Guy, Mrs. I. Shearer and Miss Street were appointed the selectors for the representative team. An invitation was received from the secretary of the Auckland Training College team inviting Rotorua to send a team through to play them at Auckland on July 22. As tbis date was consiHered too early the secretary was instructed to thank Training College for their invitation, but requesting that a later date be fixed. The Ngongotaha delegate explained that the team had not been able to fulfil its engagements for the last two Saturdays on account of three resignations being received. They were finding difficulty in filling these vacancies. In view of the circumstances and the extra expense involved in bus fares each week by the Ngongotaha team, the committee resolved to allow the team to replace theso players without any extra cliarge for registration. Wednesday Competition Another round in the mid-week competition was also completed last Wednesday and in the first game H.S.O.S. A proved too strong ■ for Tui A. Old Students at times indulged in some good passing, the ball often travelling the length of the field without being intercepted. Tui's teamwork showed improvement, but their shooting could have. been better. Their forwards found themselves considerably hampered by Old Students' active defence. The game ended H.S.O.S. A 19, Tui A 7. The referee was Mrs. I. Shearer. H.S-O.S. B v. Aotea Old Students B had all the best of the game in the first half of their match with Aotea, their passes being much quicker and surer. Hesitant
and wild passing by Aotea often losing them the ball, while their opponents were quiclc to take up the attack with every opportunity. At halftime Old Students were leading by six goals to nil. In the second spell Aotea improved considerably and play became much more even. Aotea were now playing a hard game and managed to keep thedr opponents in check. Both teams secured three goals in this half. The final score showed H.S.O.S. B 9, Aotea 3. Mrs. E. Guy was the referee. At the High School ground, Wara, tah gained another victory by defeating the High S'chool A team by 20 goals to 8. As the latter team has been indulging in some hard practice of late a closer score was anticipated. Tui B, the newcomers to the association this season were defeated by the High School B team by a large margin of goals. As the Tui players are very keen and just commencing the game, consistent practice and a reliable team combination should be their aim. Miss Street was in charge of the above two games. Representative Trials Players will be decided from nbxt Saturday's games and the first series of trials will take place on Saturday, June 24. Saturday's Fixtures No. 1 Ground — Ngongotaha v. Huia, 2 p.m. (Mrs. I. Shearer). Kowkai v. Waratah, 2.30 p.m. (Mrs. I. Shearer). No. 2- Ground— H.S.O.S. A v. H.S.O.S. B, 2.20 p.m. (Mrs. E. Guy).
