FAREWELLED BY BAY OF PLENTY BAR

Tauranga, Thursday. Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., who has been stipendiary magistrate for the Bay of Plenty distriet for the past five years was farewelled at the Courthouse last night by members of the Tauranga and Te Ptlke Bar, the police foree and citizens. Mr. H. A. Sharp spoke of the great loss the legal profession had sustained in Mr. Paterson's transfer to Hamilton and wished him all suceess in the future. Mr. H. O. Cooney, of Te Puke, said he hoped Mr. Paterson would continue to move upwards and trusted other honours wonld be added and that the years would bring him still deeper. wisdom and keener insight. Other members of the legal profession and "Constable Skinner, on behalf of the police force, paid tributes to Mi*. Paterson. Mr. Paterson, responding, said that he was deeply moved by the graceful tributes but was conscious more of his shortcomings than of anything else. He had not always been patient and his reasoning was not always correct. He could only plead in extenuation that he did his best to uphold his idea of British justice. The gathering then adjourned to the Magistrate'svroom where Mr. Paterson was farewelled socially and presented with a case of pipes as a rhark of the esteem of those present. AltliOugh Mr. Paterson is relihquishing his charge of the Te Puke,. Tauranga and Opotiki edtirts, He Yrill continue to sit in Rotorua whieh will remain within his distriet.
