MEETING FORMS SPECIAL COMMITTEE TO ,HELP UNEMPLOYED

At a public meeting held in King Street Hall on Tuesday night, convened by the Mayor, Mr. W. Sullivan, a committee was formed for the purpose of relieving distress among the unemployed in Whakatane. The mayor stated that the efforts of the retiring committee last winter were appreciated, and though it desirable to form another committee and work along the same lines as previously. The' Rev. R. Day was appointed chairman and a committee, comprising the following was formed: — Messrs. A. F. Moncur, S. S. Shapley, C. E. Gibberd, R. Thickpenny, H. S. Cutts, H. S'outhy, J. Wylie and Rev. S. F. H. Weymouth with the Mayor, ex-officio. The committee is to meet every Thursday to consider different deserving cases. The Unemployment Workers' Association has been very active in enterviewing different local bodies with the object of improving conditions. It is understood that the association has agreed to co-operate with the newly formed central relief committee.
