FRANCE SCEPTICAL
IF GERMANY CIIANGED FRONT Rec. May 22. London, May 21. A memorable week in the world's •history closed on a note of cautious optimism. France remains sceptical, and fears that Herr Hitler's new moderation cannot be genuine. Frenchmen ask: Did Herr Hitler call the Reichstag with the intention of following Herr Von Papen and Baron Neurath with a similar aggressive declaration? Did he alter his tone at the last moment in the face of the firm words from Great Britain and America? Is Germany's change of front a mere manoeuvre to forc-e France on to the horns of a dilemma, so that she will be either rushed into acceptance of a plan of deficient security or be charged with obstructing a settlement? M. Daladier leaves little doubt as to his determination to yield nothing excepting exchange for inviolable guarantees. M. Paul Boncur will go to Geneva with strictly-defined instructions, .following an urgent meeting of the Cabinet last night.
