SIR THOMAS SIDEY

Dunedin, Saturday. The death has occurred of Sir Thomas Kqy Sidey, M.L.C. The Hon. Sir Thomas Kay Sidey, K.B., M.L.C. who will be long remembered for the introduction of "sum-

mer time" in New Zealand, was born in Dunedin on May 27, 1863, a son of the late John Sidey, a pioneer settler of Otago, who arrived from Scotland in 1848. Sir Thomas was educated at private schools and latterly at the Otago Boys' High School and Otago Univer-

sity, where he graduated B.a. and LL.B. He was admitted to the bar in 1889. t Sir Thomas had a wide field of social activities in Dunedin before being elected in 1901 as first member fcr the Caversham (later South Dunedin) electorate, a seat which he held continuously until his retirement in 1928. In the same year he was called to the Legislative Council, and filled the offiee of Attorney-General and Minister of Justice under the United Government. He was specially associated with dental legislation, prison raform, daylight saving (the legislation promoted by him for 19 years being even tually passed in 1927). He was knighted in 1930. Sir Thomas was keenly- interested in education and was .a prominent member of the Otago High School's Board of Governors, and suceessively vice-chancellor and chancellor of the Otago University, holding the latter position at the time of his death. He had also been a member of the New Zealand University Senate since 1925. Sir Thomas is survived by Lady Sidey, and one son, Mr. T. K. S. Sidey.
