COALITIONISTS STILL LEAD BY ENORMOUS MAJORITY

TIELMAN ROOS DEFEATED

Capetown, May 18. At 5 p.m. to-day the state of the parties was: — Coalitionists, 115; Independents, 5; Roosites, 2; Labourites, 2; total, 124. There are 24 votes to come. Mr. p. G. W. Grobler, Minister for Native Alfairs, defeated Mr. Teilman Roos by 544 votes. Mr. Jan Grobler, a son of the Minister, was returned for the neighbouring constituency, defeating his opponent, a supporter of Mr. Roos,
by upwards of 1000 votes. The last general election in South Africa was held on June 12, 1929. General Hertzog's Nationalist Party was returned to power with a clear majority over all the other parties. The respective strengths in the House of Assembly were: — Nationalists, 78; South African Party, 61; Creswellite Labour, 5; Mational Couneil Labour, 3; Independent, 1; total seats 148. Last March the Nationalists and South African parties merged giving them 139 supporters.
