WITH THE GALLOPERS
TE KUITI MEETING SATURDAY AND MONDAY ARE PRELUDE TO NORTHERNS . THE FIELDS REYIEWED (Notes by "Canard") The fields are so big for the Te Kuiti Racing Club's venture at Te . Rapa to-morrow that punters are j likely to have a most unprofitable time and as a matter of f-act the hest thing to do is to have a look on and see what shows out for Ellerslie. The Kopaki Hurdles has no less than 23 engaged and as quite a lot of them are having their first race it will be anyone's heat and Heaven help those a horse falls in front of. One can just imagine the smash at one of the jumps if the leaders go down. Frankly no one in his senses could select anything to win this crowd, but the publie will have their little punt. Thespis, if he is to keep his position as ruling favourite- for the Great Northern Hurdles, must go well here and he is always a goer. Free Air is an improving made and Standfast is a capable hurdler. Marble King if he is ready has early speed and might go out from the barrier and keep clear of trouble long enough to get home. Te Hoia is also fast away and so is Unoco. Royal England won at Cambridge, Radiant Sun is improved, Principal is not had and The Hiker has early speed. Of the others Yalpeen from Okoroire and Regardez might show out. Those with chances include Thespis, Free Air, Standfast, Marble King, Te Hoia, Unoco, Royal England, Ruby Meteor, Principal, The Hiker and Valpeen with public choices — Thespis Free Air Te Hoia The Maiden has drawn 33 of sorts land it is pretty hopeless trying to sort them out. There has been & bit of form for Transaction, Miss Lulu, . iTahae Mea, Diversion, Musgo, Grand City, High Exchange (last season) , Gon Fuoco, Silver Wattle (very fast for a bit), Val Watch and Phiakuo 'jmd it is practically certain that there will he a big upset with a correspondingly big diwie. In this eonnection, two that ran well at Tauranga, Grand City and High Exchange, might go well. S'ubstation has not come all .this way for nothing and Silver Wattle showed a lot of speed at Te Rapa earlier in the year. Form would go for Miss Lulu, Diversion and Twenty-four Carat, but it is a real trap and the best may be — Miss Lulu. Grand City Silver Wattle Only seven are left in the King Country Steeples, but they are a really good lot, all with pretty good credentials. Billy Boy, probably the best chaser in the Dominion to-day, i has naturally pride of place, but he has a terrible burden with 12.8 to carry over three miles. Still he is a wonderful jumper and a real stayer. Makeup, who also has excellent credentials as a timber-topper, has 11.3 and being in receipt of 191b from the topweight should help him. He has done a lot of short distance racing should be fairly well forward. Wiltshire has not reproduced his best form of late, but is on his home track. Master Lu 'Showed signs of form at Paeroa and he should by now be a •vastly improved horse. He was then on the big side, but ran creditably enough. Lucess should go well and is one of the most likely ones. Neil showed a bit of form at Ellerslie, but may need more experience. Star Comet if ready will go a nice race for he goes well when there are no hills to face. It should be a good go with preferences for — Lucess Master Lu
Billy Boy Again a big field will salute the starter in the President's ten furlongs; Royal Artist is the topweight, a pound more to carry than Flying Prince and reports state that Frank Foster has the. latter in fine order. Lady Quex is up from Taranaki, but has yet to see the distance out. Speedmint is one of the early favourites and is coming back to form. Gibraltar won easily the other day and might go well in this field. Alloy is always reliable and Limeen is showing good work. One that might upset things is Tarporley, who though he is hard to keep right is almost a sitter if he can reproduce his form of last year. Teels and Grand Tea will have to improve on previous showing, but both Chang and Ruri, the latter particularly, must have chances. Ornamental reads best of the rest. The race is open with popular choices likely to be — Speedmint Ruri Gibraltar There is another big field in the Otorohanga Handicap six with Woodful at' the head of alfairs. Anything
might win and form is so involved that all that can be done is to indicate a few possibilities, Imamint, Puss Moth, Mahkill, Rita's Light, Sinking Fund, Intaglio, Darlc Marble, Sweet Whisper, Booldaw, Beau Irish and Colossical all have chances and the best may include — Puss Moth ' Mahkill Dark Marble There are nine in the Te Kuiti Hurdles with Prince of Orange to give 51b. of Cruachan. Both are good hurdlers. Paddon won last year on this course and in the wet is wonderful hurdler. Emancipation is one of the most likely of the lot and on form must.be very hard. True Blood has shown that he can jump and won in his first essay. High Commissioner and Biform are both good ones and Mangani, who won a Grand National, is in well. Mia Stella would read the one with the least chance. An open race with preferences for— Emancipation Printe of Orange Paddon The Stewards is also very open and prevailihg favourites include British Columbia, Tradesman, Prolyxo, Desert -Star, Jonathan, Sea Ruler King Ford and Lucy Rose of whom the best may be — ' British Columbia Tradesman
