Napier, Sunday. Mrs. Mary Porter and her son, [ J ames Porter, of Pukekohe, and Mrs. i Martha Cooper, of 47 Crummer Road, ; "Grey Lynn, Auckland, had a miraculous escap© from death when their ! car, travelling toward Taupo, went i over a 150 foot bank, about nine ;i miles on the Taupo side of ' Tarawera. | Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Cooper were •'not seriously hurt, suffering mainly l from abrasions and shock, hut James [ Porter, aged 17, lie-s in a critical conj dition, suffering from gashes in both j legs and a cut over the right eye and i injuries to the head, thought to he j facial fracture of the skull. [ The driver of car, Mrs. Porter, it ("is reported, was negotiating a sharp • bend when the car swung too far out toward the bank with the result she was unable to prevent it from going over. The injured people were given assistance a short while after the accident, hut it took four hours to sbring them back on to the road, and then to Tarawera Hotel. The car was considerably damaged. Luckily Dr. Berry, of Napier, happened to be spending the week-end at Tarawera and his services were obtained to attend to the injured.
