TRIBUTE TO HONESTY
CLOSENESS OF VOTING Rec. May 14, 11 p.m. Sydney, May 14. There is a good deal of speculation among friends of the Government as to why yesterday's referendum vote was. so close, having regard to the Government's decisive victory at last general election. It is explained that apart from the difficulty of carrying a referen;dum on any occasion, espeeially upon a constitutional question, quite a large section of the Government sup- ' porters disagreed with the method j whereby the Government proposed ; to elect memhers of the reformed Legislative Council, preferring that they shonld he elected by the popular j !vote of the people as is the case of ; the Assemhly, instead of by Parliament itself as is intended. However, Ministers agreed it is a , tribute to their honesty of purpose ^ that the referendum should be carried by any majority however small, in view of the misrepresentations indulged in by political opponents prior to the polling.
