TRIBUTE TO SANITY Rec. May 14, 5.5 p.m. Syid'ney, May 13. The total votes on the roll was 1,476,197, and it is believed that 92 per cent. of the votes will have been recorded as voting is compulsory. The electors were asked to vote on the simple question of yes or no. "Are you in favour of the Constitution Amendment Act?" The Premier, Mr. B. S. Stevens, broadcasting, said he regarded the issue as beyond douht. He expected the affirmative majority to be at least 30,000, which he deelared would he a remarkable trihute to the sanity and reasonableness of the people of this great State. "I regard the result with almost satisfaction. The Government will go straight ahead giving effect to the people's will for the new elective chamber, which will be a safeguard to the rights of democracy and cause stability and prosperity." Mr. J. T. Lang expressed the. opinion that the final will he extremely close, revealing the significant change in puhlic opinion since last election. He is doubtful whether the Government will be able to claim victory from the referendnm. It seems more like a moral victory for Labour.
