CHILD HURT

KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR IN OPOTIKI STREET
Opotiki, Friday. A serious accident occured at about 1.30 p.m. on Thursday when Irene Horne, aged four, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Horne, of Main Street, Opotiki, was knocked down and badly injnred by a passing car. It appears that the child was playing between the cars parked down the centre of Main Street, and ran across the road just in front of a car which was being driven slowly from the direction of the Otara Bridge towards Church Street, by- Mr. Charles Kenneth Carpenter, a school teacher from Ruatoki. The. car was pulled up in thirteen fhet and ■ the child was found to be caught between the back of the front wheel, the mudguard and a cable. An eyewitness reports tliat one wheel of the car passe-d over the child which was bleeding from the head when picked up. .. , ■ •. The child was conveyed to its home which was only a few yards from the scene- of the accident and a,dpctor arived a few moments later-. -.After the doctor had made his -inspection, she' was taken to the Opotiki -Hospital, where she is reported to be suffering from a fractured skull and • ribs; her condition is very low. Mr. ,'W. P. Massey, a school. teacher at Morrinsville and two ladies . were passengers in the car at the tilne of the accident. Thg child was later examined by Dr. W. S. "Wallis of Rotorua. 'Rteports from the hospital last evening stated that there was a slight improvement in her condition.
