HIGH HOPES FOR COMING CONFERENCE IN LONDON •ALL FEELING STRAIN
Wellington, Friday. On the eve of his departure for the World Economie Conference, the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, stated to-day: — "I desire to express to my fellowcitizens my heart-felt sympathy with. I them in the serious and difficult time through. which they are passing. .1 realise that there is no household free from anxiety for the future, and that all sections of the community are feeling the strain. This position arig- | es out of the eatastrophic fall in the | world's markets, and an improvement i in these markets will be immediately ! refiected by improved conditions in | the Dominion. "The Conference is meeting for the i purpose of devising some plan by j which this improvement may be | brought about, as every nation is in j the same plight as New Zealand. The | issues are too urgent, too great, for | anything but the most serious considI eration by tho Conference, and every ! endeavour should be made to prevent ! selfish motives from defeating the | object for which tlie Conference has ! been called. "My fervent hope is that the Conference will be a success, and that j before long the dark clouds will pass away and the spectrW of unemployI ment be banished from our midst. j "I fully realise the problems the Government have to deal with during j rny absence, but I leave with the ut- } most confidence in Mr. Goates apd ! my other colleagues, and kno.w that ' the affairs of the Dominion are. in competent hands."
