THOUSANDS ON RO AD SIDE. "Acres of Diamonds" was almost literally true on the roadside a few miles from Manila, Philippines. Searchers found 4763 small diamonds, with several thousand more still to be recovered. ' They were tossed there hy 'Emanuel Stmuss, memher of a Manila jewellery firm who was charged with a £11,400 shortage. He confessed he had planned to commit suicide, but weakened and returned with a tale of being kidnapped and robbed. He said he was drunk when he threw the gems away.
