PRISONERS' ESCAPE
WRENCH BAR OFF WINDOW AND GET' AWAY ? IN' CAR Gisborne, Saturday. In .the early hours of this morning two prisoners, eonfined in the Gis*borne gaol, awaiting sentence and trial 011 several charges, broke gaol and escaped. It suhsequently was -discovered that ia motor-car had been stolen from. a private igarage. The escapees- are Norman Alfred O'Meara, aged 36, and Wilkin Rairisdon Avery, aged 25, who were recently -arrested at Opotiki on a charge -of assault and rohbery under arrns" at Tokomaru Bay, and who suhsequently pleaded guilty to charges of burglary. The men were eonfined in: separate cells. They succeeded-in" forcin^- out the centre bar of the window iri- each case, and then prised off the Tock«of the door and walked biit on to -the beach. 1 ; • It is believed four h'ours elapsed before the escape was discovered: •* All 'police throughout ihe district have- been notified and' the* huht ff or the escapees is proceedipg.
