DARING ATTEMPTED HOLD-UP IN MELBOURNE BANK FAILS TELLER BLINDED WITH PEPPER

Rec April 23, 6.30 p.m. Melbourne, April 23. Entering the Carlton branch of the English, Scottish and Australian bank on Saturday, a man threw pepper into the eyes of the teller, Mr. Frewin and seized a pile of notes. The ledgerkeeper, Mr. Hayes, noting the action, drew a pistol and shot the robber in the chest. The latter fell back and the notes scattered. He rushed to the door, where Mrs. O'Halloran, who had heard.the shot attempted to stop him. He- punched her and made off, but collapsed in a nearby lane, and was taken to the hospital where he died a few minutes after, having refused to give- his name. The teller's eyes were badly injured. The notes were recovered, but the robber is still unidentified.
