FLOODLIGHTS LONDON THREE AND HALF MILLION GALLONS OF RUM BURNED DAMAGE OVER £4,000,000

Rec. April 23, 7 p.m. *4 t London, April 23. The biggest and most spectactilar fire in London for many years occurred last night iri Rum Quay in the West Indian Dock. The last warehouse, in which millions of galIons of rum were stored in kegs and vats caught fi^e. St. Paul's was silhouefted against the glow which was seeii for 30 miles. The whole of London was floodlit and an enormous crowd watched the fire. The flames rose 80 feet and the glow was observed 30 miles distant. Three and a half million gallons of rum stored in bonded warehouses blazed fiercely for five hours, despite the efforts of 400 firemen. Cascades of blazing liquor from bursting barrels ponred into the dock and burned furiously on the surface of the water. The fumes v/ere so overpowering that the firemen had to work in relays, finally using oxygen breathing masks. • The damage is estimated at £4,000,000.
