WELDING GAS ALIGHT CLOSE TO CYLINDER OF OXYGEN
(From
Opotiki, Sunday. The Opotiki Fire Brigade was called upon to face a potentially dangerous situation on Saturday morning when a cylinder of welding gas in Armstrong and Kidd's garage caught fire. When the brigade arrived, it f ound that the flaming cylinder was in close proximity to a cylinder of oxygen. In view of the danger of an explosion, the brigadesmen had to be content to stand by and prevent the outbrealc from spreading without dealing directly with the gas cylinder. When the flames began to spread to the wall, however, the brigade useff the hose once and subdued them. The gas finally burnt itself out without further damage. The- event was not without its humorous side, however. Quite a crowd had collected around the hose leading into the building in disobedience to instructions, but there was a wild scatter when a pinhole leak suddenly widened and the water burst but to spray all and sundry.
