NEW CABINET MINISTER SURPRISED BY NEWS Wellington, Monday. Intimation of his appointment to the Cabinet is stated to have come as a complete surprise to Mr. J. Bitchener. He received an urgent telephone call while at lunch at Waimate on Saturday to he in Wellington yesterday morning, and so short was the notice given that he had to leave his meal unfinished. It was not until he reached Wellington that he Avas acquainted with the fact that Mr. Coates desired him, to enter the Ministry. Mr. Bitchener attended his first Cabinet meeting in the afternoon, but he will not make a serious start with his official duties until after Easter.
