KOMITI MARAE FORWARDS A NUMBER OF REQUESTS At last evening's meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council, a number of matters affecting Whakarewarewa village were under consideration.
Cr. H. Tai Mitchell submitted the following names recommended by the Tuhourangi for appointment as the village koniiti marae: Mr. A. Warbrick, Mr. Taiamai Amohau, Mr, Te Kira Hemopo, Mr. "Maika Waaka, Mr. Tamihana Pauro. The council was advised that at a meeting held for the purpose of selecting the names for the komiti marae the following resolutions were passed: —
(a) Mita Taupopoki asks that the Borough Council gives its assurance that the council' has no designs on the acquisition of Whakarewarewa for all time. (b) That the applications for caretaker at Whakarewarewa be submitted to the new committee for decision or recommendations. (c) That Cr. Bayfeild be appointed as the eouncil's representative on the komiti marae at Whakarewarewa. It was pointed out that Cr. Mitchell already represented the council on the komiti.
Cr. Smith moved that the recommendations be agreed to with the exception of clause C. Cr. G. Urquhart objected that Crs. did not know the personnel of the komiti suggested. - The town clerk explaiped that Cr. Mitchell had presided at the meeting of the komiti and was satisfied with the list of names. Cr. Coleman moved that the matter be deferred until Cr. Mitchell was present. at the council. , Cr. A. Smith said that he kn.ew all the men personally and considered them suitable. The, mayor. pointed out , that the couqcil should defer the matter until the new council were elected as f ar as the. eouncil's representative was concerned, but that the Tuhourangi representatives should be appointed. This latter was done. . . Touching Mita Taupopoki's request, the mayor said that the council had nevef had any designs on the land at Whaka and when the Tuhourangi had got up a petition to be removed from the jurisdiction of the borough, the borough had raised tio bbjection. ■ It'was resolved to reply to that eff ect. ;• • ^ ^ Dealiiig with the appoiiitmerit of tlie* caretaker the councilldrs were of the opinion that the final decision must be left in their handst
