THE SEARCH FOR GOLD PROVIDES PLENTY OF WORK encourAging results
(Special to
Christchurch, Saturday. The revival in goldmining has done a lot to assist the unemployed in the South Island. It is reported that there is no ohe on the dole in the Cromwell district for instance and • business appears to be brisk. Giving his impressions a visitor to-day said gold was being brought to the bank, and it would be interesting to knbw how much of the precious metal was being sold. "It must be a pretty tidy sum„ he added. He had not met a single. man fossicking on the river banks or elsewhere, who wanted to return to towp life. All seemed to be making good, and liked the life at Cromwell. The township would be even more prosperous when the Kawarau River reached its winter level, ' for even better re-turns wouldjhen be obtained. Should the Kawarau gates again be closed this winter,, the working of the river banks would be helped considerably. Last year the Kawarau Amalgamated Company, which now proposes to build -another dam below the Arrow River, allowed unemployed to work the river when the gates were closed, and the same may happen again this winter. If so, there should be many - more ready to try their luck.
