SAYED FROM FLOODS (To the Editor) Sir, — Would you allow me space in your columns to record my appreciation of the service rendered to the town of Opotiki by the erection of the stop banks for the purpose of keeping the town from being floded. Mr. J. T. Thompson who was the instigator of the movement had a great deal of harsh criticism levelled at him when trying to get the work done, but did at last succeed and I think it only fair that he should now receive some credit for his public spirited foresaght in the matter. We ishould remember that the work was done by unemployed labour, thus making some real use of our relief funds for once. It was estimated that the big flood in 1918 did £10,000 of damage to the town in one sweep and the flood which we had the other day was equally as high as that, or posisibly higher. Again in 1925 when there were three floods in succession, quite a number of families left the town because of the floods. Another point is that, with no stagmant flood water in the town area the possibilities of an outbreak of sickness are considerably reduced. I think Mr. Thompson is to be heartily congratulated on his action. — I
