RADIO NOTES

'Kathode.")

D.X. LISTENERS CATERED FOR BY STATflON WNBX. INCREASE IN LICENSES.

(Notes hy

I During the last few weeks the wa.ning of the summer season h*s had its reward for radio listeners and many sets have once again heen tuned to distant stations with some measure of success. Static has naturally not heen altogether absent, but on many j oceasions has diminished to an extent ! which has made listening not altogether ian unpleasant pastime. Australian and American stations, with KFI in the ascendency, have been coming in with plenty of volume, ana | the mornings have been quite good for short-wave reception, while the afternoons have been fair. A number of listeners have proI hably heen attracted to a piping | whistle heard on American wavelengths. The whistle is like a sustained note with an occasional break and is what -is termed a "tone test." i Steady IncreaSe. Wireless licenses issued in the Dominion stiill continue to show ia .substantial increase, the registrations on January 31 being 1393 greater than for the previous month. The figures for the four registration districts on this date were as follows; — District Class iRiec. T'tng. Auckland 26,208 144 Canterbury .15,037 166 Otago 11,468 95 Wellington .... 36,964 271 Totals 89,677 676 Cricket Tour. In connection tvith the forthcoming j visit of the English cricket team, the | j Broadcasting Board has again shown , ! enterprise in arranging for Captain | E. W. Ballantine, the eminent sport- | i ing authority with the team, to hroad- ! cast a tallc on the day's play in each J i of the New Zealand matches from , 2YA at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, and Wednesday, March 22, and from 3YA at the same hour on Friday, | March 24, Saturday, March 25. and | Monday, March 27. _ j Captain Ballantine has given broad- | cast reviews of each match during the [ Englishmen's tour in Anstralia, and j his talks after each day's play in the i Test matches were relayed throughout j the Commonwealth. Captain Ballantine is recognised as j oue of the world's sports authorities. ; He toured with the South African j cricketers, and also reviewed the 1 matches of the British Rugby League team through New South W^ales and Queensland. The recent Test match in Brishane i was th9 9th T est match which he j has "reported." D.XX. Programmes. Station V7NBX, Springfield, Ver- j mont, operating on 1260 k.c. (238 j metres), power 250 watts, has arrang- J ed to transmit a special d.x. pro- ; giamme for the henefit of New Zealand listeners on March 18. The programme will he received in the Dominion between 8.30 and 9.30, New Zealand standard time. Another overseas station to cater for distant listeners is KGER, Long Beach, California,- which every Sunday morning up to"2 a.m. Pacific standard time, presants a programme of the latest recordings. The hroadcast usually concludes with the latest tips to d.x. enthuiasts compiled for the station by several of the largest d.x. clubs in America. Longwave Band Extended. European listeners who congjratullate"d themselves that the Madrid conference had extended the hroadcast band on long waves by 41 kiocycles upori closer inspection found that the conference had merely confirmed the status quo which had existed for years. Hope now centres upon th'e decision of the Swiss Post and Telegraph Department to invite all European administrations to a European wavle-length conference to be held not later than June 1 next, in Switzerland. Such a conference. if held might mean entire revision of the Prague plan, which more oi" less dominates the system at present.
