JAPANESE ANXIOUS TO AVOID MORE BLOODSHED CHINESE ATTACKING

Rec. March 10, 11 p.m. Shanghai, March 10. The Chinese claim that they drove back the Japanese a considerable distance, losing 200 men in progress. Attacks are being made by night to nullify aeroplanes. The Chinese are sending considerable reinforcements to the vicinity of Kupeikow Pass and are preparing the . whole position until ready to launch an offensive under Chiang Kai . Shek. The Japanese legation at Peking attempted negotiations for the withdrawal of Chinese forces in order to prevent further bloodshed and the extension of hostilities in the Northern China, otherwise the Japanese will be eompelled to send troops through Shanghaikuan to attack the Chinese in the i"ear. The Japanese announced that the operations will cease when the occupation of Kupeikow is completed.
