CHANCE FOR TOWN
WINTER ATTRACTIONS domijtcon ladies' hockey tourniey may be secured. PROBLEMS FAOING ASSOCIATION Any means of stimulating the tourist traffic in Rotorua during the winter months would without doubt be greatly appreciated by the business people of the town and would be of benefit to the latter ahd the residents alike. The news that the 'Rotorua Ladies' Hockey Association is confident of securing control of the annual Dominion Ladies' hockey tournament this year, and is making every endeavour possible to do so will therefore be weleomed, as the tourney would occupy at least a week and he the means of bringing anything from 500 to .1000 people into Rotorua for this period. In view of the fact that, in a town of the size of Rotorua, little financial benefit can accrue to the association ■and that the strenuous. work of arrangement and control would fall entirely on its exeeutive, it is to be congratulated on its community spirit, I and deserves all the support which the townspeople can render it. j One of the greatest factors and most immediate problems which the exeeutive has to face is that of providing billets for teams from the South Island and southern parts of the North' Island. The travelling expenses of these teams, which eomprise 15 players, manageress and chapcrone, are a severe drain on thjeir association's funds, and in order to ensure their entry probably 100 billets are required. As the Rotorua Association bas to bear the entire cost of th'e tourney, with gate-takings as the only reliable source of revenue, finance is another serious problem to be considered. The association is confident, however, that realising the amount of money which would be circulated in the town by the visitors, the businessmen of Rotorua would be prepared to provide some small contribution as a guarantee against loss. Arrangements. for the conduct of an appeal to all concerned are at present being formulated by the secretary of the association (Mr. C. J. Casey), who is confident that the response of both billets and financial support will enable the association to accept the control of the tournament.
For a number of years it h'as been common knowledge that should Rotorua secure allocation of the tournament the entry of teams from both Islands would be laxger than for any tournament heldj in recent years. It may, therefore, be assumed that if the tourney of next August comes to Rotorua, the influx of players and supP'orters would approximate the larger figure previously mentioned. It therefore behoves each and every resident to support tne association in its endeavour to provide for Rotorua a week of sport which would be second to none for gaiety and one of most valuable benefit to the; town.
