OLD PUPILS' ASSN. ANNUAL REPORT SHOWS j VERY SATISFACTORY YEAR. RECORD OF ACTIVHTES. Tlie annual general meeting of tne Rotorua District High Sehool Old Pupils' Association was held last week. There were 40 members present, apologies for absence being received from Mrs. Harwood and Miss R. Campny. Mr. W. G. Harwood (president), I who oceupied the chair, weleomed the members who were present. He said taht although he had only known the association a short time, he had enjoyed, those social functions he had attended very much. He hoped that in the ensuing years tne bond between the school and the association would beeome firmer. The balance sheet for the year ending January 31, 1933, as read by the treasurer, showed a credit balance of £16 17s 7d. This was commended highly by the chairman, who pointed out, however, that this did not mean that the association could alford to he recklessly extravagant. At this point the chairman gave a resume of school activities for the year, to a much interested audience. The election of officer.s for the year then took place, and resulted as f ollows: — President, Mr. W. G. Harwood; vice-presidents, Miss E. Simmers, Mr. R. G. Webb; hon. secretary (girls), Miss T. A. Johnson; hon. secretary (boys), Mr. R. Dawson; hon. treasurer, Mr. P. Gainsford; committee, Misses J. Isdale, N. Devin, F. Bates, R. Steele, Messrs. M. Matthews. J. Godsalve, "I. Kingi, and P. Allen; hon. audtior, Mr. J. A. Speer; bagazine editors, Misses E. Sharpe and M. Sloane, Messrs. G. Beale and C. W. Randerson; Auckland representatives, Miss D. Crouch and Mr. T. A. Carnachan. The recommendations from the annual report were next discussed at some length and resulted in the following decisions: — (1) An enlarged photograph of Mr. Ryder is to be purchased for the hall at school. (2) The purchasing of a cup for the relay — Old Pupils v. School — was held over for another year.

(3) An Old Pupils' dinner is to be held on the night of the school sports. (4) A recommendation was passed to th'e incoming committee that they arrange for dances to be held at the school once a month, until such time as this aecommodation becomes too limited. (5) Lastly, two alterations were made to the constitution. Clause 10 was deleted, and a new nlause inserted to the effeet that those members not having paid their subscriptions for the year by the annual general meeting will be debarred from holding office or joining afRliated clubs. It was also moved that a pupil was entitled to join the association when he could after leaving school without having to pay back subscriptions. Once joined, however, he must p'a.y his subscriptions yearly. The new committee was instructed to meet on March 8, at 7 p.m., and after a vote of thanks to the chair, the meeting adjourned. The Annual Repoart. The annual report stated, inter alia: Finance. — The committee started the year with a credit balance of £8 5s 7d, and are pleased to report that this has been increased to £16 17s 7d. This increa.se of nearly 100 per cent. has only been made by careful handling of 'finances, and your committee recommend that for the coming year a close watch be kept on expenditure. During the year a Savings Bank aecount has been opened in the names of the secretary and treasurer. Membership . — At a special general meeting of the association an alteration was made in the constitution whereby ex-pupils of the old District High School were eligible for membership. Many O.H.S. ex-upipls have taken advantage of the opportunity thus alforded them of joining the association, with the result that there are now 153 financial members. The foilowing is an outline of the snovts activities of the association: —

Basketball. — The Old Girls' Basketball Club reports a very successful season. They were defeated for the cup honours in the last game of the season. They fielded two teams, both of which showed an exceptionally fine team spirit. The girls wish to thank Mrs. Guy for her untiring efforts in eoaching their team so suncessfully. The winner of Mrs. Guy's medal for the most improved player was Robina Johnson. Tennis. — Two tournaments (Old Pupils v. School) were held at the school, one during tne last term of 1932, and at which Amy Mitchell, from the High School, was the winner. Owing to the number of other attractions the tournament held on Anniversary Day was not the snccess it might have been. Circket The cricket team has now definitely established itself, and played regularly in the Saturday competitions. Although not successful from tne point of view of results, the cricket committee report that the^ club performs a very important service in keeping cricketers together, and is a success socially. The committee wish to thank the association for the generous donation of £2 2s towards buying cricket maDuring the year the club held a match with Hamilton High School Old Boys, which was won by tbe latter by 8 runs. They propose to arrange a match against Takapuna later m the season. , „ Swimming. — Althought the formation of an Old Pupils' swimming ; club has been discussed at some length by your committee, nothing dennite has yet been accomplished. However, a iist of possible members is m the ihands of the secretary, and on this the. incoming committee may bmld l s foundation. , Footba.ll. — During last season the

Football Club entered a Junior and Third-grade team in the local competitions. The Third-grade team was j successful in winning tneir grade, hut the Juniors failed to show their best results till towards the end of the season. The committee extend to R. Musgrave and M. Matthews its heartiest congratulations in gaining Junior representative honours. A match was •arranged with Takapuna Grammar School Old Pupils for Labour weekend, but owing to the early finish of the season this had to be abandoned. It is hoped, however, that a game may be arranged in Rotorua earlier in the coming season. Annual Ball. — The profits from this function amounted to £3 0s 5d. It was an outstanding success, nowever, not only financially, but socially, because of the large attendance of old pupils. Old pupils are urged to maintain the interest taken, that the ball may be even more of a success next year. Social. — Various enjoyable dances have been held during the year, some ■at the school and some in the Majestic ballroom. Of thjese, tne uonibined School and Old Pupils' Dance isv the one most worthy of mention. In par-

ticular, Mr. Harwood expressed his appreciation of the efficient way in which arrangements were carried out by the Old Pupils' Association. The balance obtained from this dance amounted to approximately £9. Recommendations.Owing to the excellent condition of our finances, your committee puts forward the foilowing recommendations: — (1) That, an enlarged photograph of Mr. Ryder be purchased for the hall at school. (2) That the purchasing of a cup for tne relay — Old Pupils v. School— be held over for the year. (3) That the general meeting decide a date on which to hold on Old Pupils' Dinner, the incoming committee to be left, however, to malce final arrangements. Th'anks. — Your committee find it impossible to single out 'all whoi are deserving of thanks, but would like to mention in particular Mr. and Mrs. Devin, for the nse of their sittingj room for committee meetings; The Morning Post" for publishing aceounts of meetings held; Mr. and Mrs. F. iReeve for the ready assistance at all times; Mr. D. W. Steele for the free use of the supper-room at all dances; Mr. R. S. Miller for, donating prizes at many dances.
