Wellington, Wednesday The debate on the second reading of the New Zealand Debt Conversion Bill was continued when the House of Representatives met at 10.30 o'clock this morning. Mr. W. E. Barnard (Lab., Napier) said the ex-Minister of Finance had appealed to the patriotism of tlie people in conneetion with conversion, but the terms of the bill made it clear that it was a case of tbe mailed fist in a velvet glove. Mr. C. ii. Clinkard (Govt., Rotorua) expressed the opinion that the Government was doing the right thing. Mr. W. E. Parry (Lab., Auckland Central) supportecl the contention that conversion would be compulsory and not voluntary. Tho debate . was continued by Messrs ii. G. Diekie (Govt., Patea), ii. G. R. Mason (Lab., Auckland Suburbs), J. Connolly (Govt., Mid-Can-terbury) , F. Langstone (Lab., Waimarino), A. D. McLeod (Govt., Wairarapa) and E. J. Howard (Lab., Christchurch South) .
