NEWS AND NOTES
A Mana wa tu resident seems rather disturbed over the fact that a 7ft toJ mato plant is looked upon as something in the nature of a record. He state®! that he has one growing on his property which is easily 9ft high. Even this iheight, he says, is no record, as he has frequently had them over 12ft hiigh. j # * * ! A Waipukurau district farmer netted 17s 8d per head on early lambs shipped to England hy the Tainui. The New Zeaiand priee at date of s'hipping was 10s 3d per head. j * $ * 1 It is always well to be generous in feeding stock, but it would appear that some farmers' pastures are too rich altogether. Reports from Ballance, near Pahiatua, say that several isheep's teeth, glittering with gold, were exhibited in Pahiatua this week. The sheep had been grazing on the property of a weli-lcnown Ballance settler. Gold is known to exist • in various parts of the Wairarapa, and it has been mined, particularly in the Rimutakas and about Featherston, but it has yet to be found in payable l quantitles.
