FIFTH TEST

(Press. Assn.-

AUSTRALIA BATTING FIVE WICKETS DOWN FOR TOTAL OF 296 LARWOOD'S GOOD BOWLING

— By Telegraph — Copyright).

• Rec. Feb. 23, 8.10 p.m. Sydney, February 23. The fifth test commenced in fine but sultry weather. The English team was Jardine, Sutcliffe, Hammond, Larwood, Ames, Verity, Leyland, Voce, Allen. Wyatt, Paynter and Mitchell, twelfth man. When stumps were drawn Australia had lost five wickets for 296. Jai-dine's face registered disappointment at losing the toss. and Woodfull and Richardson opened on a perfect wieket. The pre-lunch period proved again Larwood's superiority over the Australian batsmen. Before a run had been scored, Richardson snicked Larwood's fifth ball to Jardine, and Bradman had to act the role of opening batsman. Bradman immediately attaclced the bowling, but was pulling away from Larwood's deliveries. Both Yoce and Larwood started with the orthodox off field, but later changed to the leg theory. Larwood sent down many bumpers, which Woodfull ducked smartly. Allen was erratic and 21 runs resulted from his first- two overs. Bradman, playing delightfully, punched Allen through the covers to the fence. Woodfull and Bradman added 59, of which Bradman made 43. When Larwood returned to the crease, after several balls had fiown past Woodfull's head, one kept low and Woodfull, playing it, had his stumps shattere#. Batting in his usual solid fashion, Bradman continued to draw away from the wicket when facing Larwood, who eventually bowled round his leg. Larwood's figures then read, seven overs. four maidens, 14 runs, three wickets. Twelve runs eame from three lucky snicks through the slips. Bradman batted 71 minutes and hit seven fours. At lunch. three wickets were down for 67 runs. After the adjournment, McCabe and O'Brien added 30 in 20 minutes by fine forcing cricket. Two overs from Voce yielded 22 runs and 100 appeared after 113 minutes. The partnership was worth 70 when Lorwood came on again, and immediately O'Brien was dropped in the slips by Voce. O'Brien repeated the shot in Larwood's next over and again Voce failed to hold the ball. Field' In Slips After O'Brien had cut Larwood through the slips to the boundary, the fast bowler added two more men in the slips, making five in all. The left hander then placed the ball in front of point to the fence, making the total 150 and his score *50. The pair added 99 in even time, when Larwood at short leg held a good catch to dismiss O'Brien. The Victorian is usually a slow batsman, but he gave a bright exhibition to-day. He hit six fours, and although lucky at one stage, played some fine strokes. McCabe was more subdued than usual. His half century occupied 128 minutes. He drove nicely and lifted the ball over the leg cordons very cleverly. Darling started shakily, hut had lives when 11 and 12, both hard chances. McCabe and Darling continued to foree the pace, and at 236 the sixth bowler, Wyatt, was tried. Verity was also given another trial and had McCabe caught in the slips. He batted 172 minutes and hit 11 fours. He batted in his best form and gave no chances. With Oldfield in, Darling made some great off-drives, reaching 50 in 93 minutes with six fours. It can be said for the Australians that they play entertaining cricket despite the early set backs and the fact that there were five interruptions during the day when drinks were taken to the Englishmen. Larwood finished with three wickets for 53 runs. The attendance was 26,143. and the gate receipts totalled £2300.
