RECORD BROKEN

(Special to "Post.")

WHARE AITU'S SUCCESS

Napier, last night. Competing at the Nev/ Zealand Swimming Championships held here to-night W. Whareaitu, a member of the Rotorua Amateur Swimming Club and South Auckland representative broke the existing New Zealand record in the 50 yards invitation event by one second. Whareaitu's intention of attempting to set a new time for the distance was announced prior to the race, and he won the event easily in 24 2-5 seconds, lowering the previous record of 25 2-5 seconds, made by Frankham (Auckland) last year. At a carnival heid at Hastings on Tuesday evening, 1/Vhareaitu did the distance in even better time, 1-5 second faster, but as the at™ tempt on the record had not been previously stated, this time could not be recognised. Following his success to-night, Whareaitu received a tremendous ovation from the crowd with whom he is very popular. Accompanied by his coach and manager, Mr. J. B. Perrin he leaves to-morrow for Gisborne, where he competes the same evening, probably returning to Rotorua on Saturd'ay.
