WAR IMMINENT
CHINESE DETERMINATION Rec. Feb. 17, 9.50 p.m. Shanghai, February 17 The seriousness of the situation in northern China is unsettling the mind of everyone. The feeling is growing that the Far East is on the eve of one of the bloodiest conflicts in history. Chinese Government officials refused to comment on the pending ultimata from Japan, but announced that the invasion of Jehol would he resisted to the utmost. Tension is so great in northern China that, fearing an outbrealc of fighting, thousands of Chinese are moving south. The fears of the populace have increased as a result of the removal of the famous Peking treasures, valued at many millions sterling. China now possesses a vast army outside the Great Wall, and capahle of offering serious resistance. Nothing is more remote than the compliance of tho Chinese with the Japanese ultimata.
