Rec. Peb. 16, 8 p.m. Brisbane, February 16. Despite light showers, which fell during the morning, the sixth day's play in the test wa's- resumed shortly after noon. Ironmonger and O'Reilly opened the attack. It was evident that England was prepared to take greater risks with the weatheY than with the Australian bowling. the first 20 minutes yielding* only six runs. _ England was plainly keen on winning with the greatest possible margin. Hammond was out after one hour's play, he being induced to open his shoulders to one from Ironmonger, which curled off his bat' to point where Bromley took a,n easy catch. England then required only 42 runs to win with seven wickets in hand. Hammond's score was only 14, made in 71 minutes. Leyland was the next to fall, being 'caught in the slips off O'Reilly, and only 22 were required. Leyland's 86 occupied 220 minutes, and was a valuable knor.k.
With Ames and Paynter associated, light rain commenced to fall and the batsmen opened out. Ames got a beautiful six by driving O'Reilly to the off. Then Paynter lifted McCabe to the fence at fine leg and England won by six wickets and three runs. The game ended at 1.20. Light rain has been falling since. There was little, if any, demonstration from the small crowd. The Australian players wore black arm bands and flags were flown at half niast in respect to the memory of Archie Jackson. McCabe artlessly described the last ball, "It was plainly sent up to be hit and it was hit." The attendance was about 2000 and the gate is not available.
