UNNATURAL OFFENDER SENT TO GAOL FOR LONG TERM
— By Telegraph — Copyright).
Auckland, Monday. Sentences imposed by Mr. Justice Smith on prisoners in the Supreme Court, included a term of seven years reformatfire detention on a man who had been found guilty on five counts of indece nt assault on small boys. The prisoner was Norman Bergman, a blaclcsmitla, aged 36 years. His Honour said that there was no question that on the first three counts accused was guilty of unusual and unnatural offences. His history showed that life had not been very kind to him, and it appeared that prisoner's mind had been affeeted, although he was ncf certifiable. "It is all a question of how the community is to be protected," said His Honour, "and I have decided that a long term is necessary."
