MEN REFUSE TO HANDLE SLAG AT NEW PLYMOUTH

New Plymouth, Monday. A strike of waterside workers employed on trucks handling slag from the ship, Port Napier, held up work at New Plymouth this afternoon. When work commenced this morning, sheeters working on the wharf claimed an additional rate of sixpence an hour for handling slag, to which they are not entitled under the award. The claim was referred to the disputes committee which refused to agree to the request. According to the award, the proeed- : ure is to ref er the dispute to the na- : tional disputes committee, work to : proceed without ihterruption. At 3.40 p.m., however, the men • working on the trucks refused to re- . ceive slings from the ship and no ^ more work was done during the af ter- ! noon. The dispute has been referred to the national disputes committee.
