Whakatane-Opotiki Area The report from this area indicated that many less anglers, since the New Year, were about. Gentle rain caused most rivers to rise and discolour. Fish were plentiful but with an abundance of natural food in their midst they were not too partial to the artificial lures. The best fish taken in the area, which weighed 8ilbs, was caught on the fly in the Whakatane River by Mr.. A. Mitehell. All fish taken were in very good condition. Several rivers in this district offered delightful fishing and from a scenic point of view are well worth an invasion by outside anglers, Waikato River Good reports of the fishing in this river were received. Fish up to 8) lbs were taken the average of the bags being not les-s than 4£ lbs. Mr. Hunt's outboard was frequently used by parties which had no difficulty in averaging 8 fish in anj afternoon. Capt. Haggas (London) who fished consistently below the Huka Falls again obtained good results. Using the dry fly he had no difficulty in taking 6 and 7 fish each evening. One good catch taken hy Capt. Haggas comprised 6 very good fish averaging 5 lbs. From the Wairakei stretch three good fish were taken by Miss Jones. Mr. L. Taulpo Area Owing to the prevalence of northerly winds the fishing at the Taupo end of the lake was not of the best. The launches at Taupo were fairlj* busy, however, and some good bags were obtained. One of the best catches of .the season was taken by Mes-; srs. C. A. Whitney, Dove, Dyer and Finlay, who fished from the launch "Tainui." Of the 29 fish caught by the party 11 feH to the rod of Mr* Dove and his fish averaged 7ilb, with the largest fish weighing 101b. Reynolds, limit, fish up to 81b and also a bag of 8 fish taken before eight o'clock. This angler considers the fish are in better condition than they have been for five years.
