Trotting Club Date The day, Saturday, May 20, has been allotted to the Rotorua Trotting Club for its first annual meeting. This is a fortnigh't after the Cambridge Trots and a week after Auckland. Racehorses Arrive The racehorses, Alloy and British Columhia arrived yesterday afternoon by lorry in charge of their ownertrainer, Mr. W. H. Mana, of Kaitaia. Several others are expected to arrive to-day. Young Man Arrested Arrested hy Con'stahle Brown, at Hamurana, where he had been working, a young man is to be brought before the court this morning on a charge of th'eft. Unproductive Efforts Apparently as a result of an unfounded rumour which has gained prominence among the small boy section in Rotorua many collections of white butterfly and moths have been taken to the Government Tourist office during the past week by their energetic captors with the idea of c-ollecting royalties on their catches. Needless to state the boys have nor received the welcome they antieipated and have been se.nt away "mourning their excess of enthusiasm. Labour Party Meeting The political situation generally with special reference to the Labour platform will he dealt with in an
aaaress on 1 riday evening by Mr. James Thorn, National Secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party. Mr. Thorn is one of the most able speakers in the ranks of the party 'and before his appointment to his present position was for 12 years editor of the New Zealand Worker. He was one of the founders of the party in New Zealand and between 1909 and 1913 worlced in the British Labour Party in close association with its most prominent leaders. Race Meeting Holiday In order to promote the holiday atmosphere as far as possible and give staffs of business houses an opportunity to attend the meeting, an invitation has been extended business people by the Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, to close their premises on the afternoons of Saturday and Monday. Swimming Club Trophy The secretary of the Rotorua Swimming Club (Mr. H. Wilkinson) yesterday received from the donors, Manawatu Hosiery Co. Ltd., the "Speedo Cup" which has been given hy the firm as a trophy for the competitor gaining the most points in the club's 66 2-3yds, 100yds and 150 yds championship events. The cup is a most striking piece of work and is a most valuable and appropi'iate trophy. Bowlers' Concert To-night Probably one of the most impoi'tant and enjoy able social functions in connection with the Rotorua Bowling Club's annual open tournament is the bowlers' concert which will he held to-night in the Town Squaa*e, providing weather conditions are suitable. The proeeeds of the silver coin collection will he donated to the Women's Club funds for the relief of distress in the town, and th'e collection therefore will no doubt receive ths-^upport it deserves. Besides numerous items provided by the visiting bowlers, many well known Rotorua entertainers will assist while the Rotorua Municipal Band will provide the orchestral side of the progi'amme. Should conditions prevent the concert being held in the Town Square, the entertainment will he held in the Lyric Hall. A Popular Beach The growing popularity of Ohope beach as a holiday resort h'as been well evidenced this year by the number of visitors at the beach. Many of these have come from far afield and the indications are that next year will find Ohope a very husy beach indeed. Sheltered by its picturesque bush' clothed cliffs and looking acrosS to the Ohiwa, inlet with Opotiki and Ca.pe Runaway in the distanee Ohope is one of Nature's sheltered nooks which man will inevitably seek out.
