NEW VICAR WELCOMED
SOCIAL EVENING Many people met at the Parish Hall on Monday evening to welcome the Rev. C. G. G. Salt, vicar of St. Stephen's Church, and family to Opotiki. Mr. W. Kirkbride., vicar's warden of the church, in welcoming the newcomers, expressed his pleasure at seeing so many present. He. extend- ' ed a welcome to members of other denominations who had come along to meet the Rev. Salt and family. A programme was arranged for the evening and in between various items, other speeches were made. The mayor, Mr. J. T. Thompson, welcomed the new vicar to Opotiki and assured him that he would make many friends. The Rev. Dennis, relieving parson of the Methodist Church, Captain Andrews, of the 'Salvation Army, and Mr. J. G. Murray, on behalf of the Rev. McDiarmid (Presbyterian) spoke similarly. Before supper the Rev. C. G. G. Salt responded by thanking the people for their hospitality extended to himself and to his family. He hoped that their life in Opotiki would be a very happy one. Items were contributed as follows. — Song "A Bird with Broken Wings," Miss B. Kelly; song, "Just for Today," with "Sword of Ferrana," as an encore, Mr. Y. J. Cooke; duet, "Larboard Watch, Ahoy," Messrs. E. Boyce and J. Wilson; song, "Fluerette," Miss F. Sydenham; song, "I Did Not Know," Mr. J. Wilson (encored) ; recitation, Mrs. W. White; song, "I Love to Dance With You," Mrs. L. Stewart; song, "Beeause," Mr. E. Boyce; solo, "Spring has Come," MrS. J. Shaw. Competitions were won by Mr. J. Wilson, Mrs. L. Stewart and Miss C. Larner and games were arranged by Messrs. P. Halloway and F. Sydenham.
