Auckland, Thursday. A conferenee between the Northern Miners' Union and the Northern Coal Mine Owners opened to-day. In the new agreement the owners propose a' 5 per cent. reduetion in the case of wage workers and a 7i per cent. reduetion in the pay of piece-workers. Mr. W. D. Holgate, president of the New Zealand Mine Owners' Association, Mr. T. O. Bishop, seeretary of the association, and directors from each of the companies are present. The following represent the miners: Messrs R. L. Roberts, G- Green, J. Clai'k,( T. Stephenson, V. Curran (chairman), and W. Davison (seeretary), Waikato; W. Wesley and C. Latham, Hikurangi; A. McLagan, seeretary of the United Miners' Union, Brunnerton.
