RECKLESS MOTORING

CONVICTIONS FOR SPEEDING ON GREAT SOUTH ROAD LICENSES SUSPENDED (Special to "Post.") Auckland, Thursday. "I will convict anyone doing 60 miles an hour on any road under any eircumstances, and will hold that , view until corrected by a higher court," remarked the mag'istrate in the Papakura Court yesterday when 'dealing with speeding motorists. John Carroll, of Te Aroha, did not appear. The inspector stated that when the car passed him he followed it, and its speed reached 40 miles an hour at the Wiri Bridge. It passed through Manurewa at 45 miles an hour, and cut across the overhead bridge on the wrong side at the same speed. It passed up the Takanini straight at 58 and down the incline at 65. Carrol had five children in the car, and he said he wanted to get them home in time for tea. The magistrate convicted Carrol and ordered his driving license to be cancelled for 12 months. "This young man is better off than most people, and he does not appreciate a fine," said Mr. E. H. Barrett, traffie inspector of the Main Highways Boai'd, in proseeuting Colin Lewis, motor garage proprietor, of Tuakau, for dangerous driving- on the Great South Road. Mr. Barrett said that he followed Lewis' car from Runciman. At Takanini defendant accelerated to 60 miles an hour. Entering a plea of guilty on behalf of defendant, Mr. Clavis said it was true that Lewis had never regarded fines as a deterrent. Mr. Levien: He must be a perfect pest and a menace on the road. Defendant was convicted and fined £4 and his license was suspended until February 28.
