ADVANCE IN PRICES London, Jan. 17. The wool saies opened with strong competition. Merinos advanced 5 per cent. Crossbreds were from par to l~k per cent. higher. At the wool saies 9751 bales were offered, including 3529 of New Zealand. About 7620 bales were sold. It was a fairly representative selee'tion. There was a crowded attendance and brisk general competition, buyers representing Yorkshire, France and Germany all bidding keenly, the Continental operators being especially active for Merinos, of which greasy advanced fully 5 per cent., compared with December's. closing rates, and scoureds were from par to five per cent. higher. In crossbreds, fine advanced 7S per cent., with medium and coarse at par, 5 per cent.
