COTTON TRADE
JAPAN'S COMPETITION • Loncs'on, Jan. 16. During a visit to Manchester Mr. S. M. Bruce (Australian Minister to Britain) found the cotton manufacturers extremely -despondent at the extent of Japanese competition, and the latter's ability to heavily undersell despite tariffs. They also were apprehensive of losing their grip .on the Australian cotton trade to Japan. When visiting Bradford Mr. Bruce j found the woollen manufacturers also | concerned, fearing that Japan's recent heavy purchases of Australian wool might lead, when Japan's military requirements are fulfilled, to the exploitation of the Commonwealth marlcet at the expense of British and Australian intreests.
