HOLD BLOWS UP UNDER THIRD OFFICER AND ENGINEER REACHES PORT IN TIME

London, January 16. Mr. Harry Barnes, husband of Miss Mary Cobb, the actress, has cabled to the Daily Express: — "The steamer Taronga eaught fire. at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday, and turned back to Perim, which was four hours away. "We stood by with our suitcases packed, hoping not to have to leave the ship. "Then we saw a hold explode under the third officer and third engineer, who had miracnlous escapes, and were slightly burned. They, however, continued fighting the fire. "The crew struggled all night amid suffocating smoke. "The fire spread to other holds, including casks of tallow. "The Tai'onga managed to make the harbour with a list of 30 degrees." The Taronga's cargo included 15,000 bales of wool, 1900 tons of flour, 3600 tons of wheat, and 1500 tons of copra.
