Rec. Jan. 14, 11 a.m. London, Jan. 13. Mr. J. H. Thomas, British Secretary for the Dominions, speaking at Newport, denied the allegation made by Mr. de Yalera to the effect that Mr. Thomas had said to Mr. Sean O'Kelly, the Irish Free State YicePresident, while they were at Ottawa: "We need not have any settling hecause you will have another civil war in Ireland within a few months." According to Mr. de Valera, a statement to this effect was made reeently by Mr. O'Kelly, to a Dublin audience. "The best evidence. that I said no such thing," Mr. Thomas added, "is that I was engaging almost daily in conversations with the Free State delegation to discover a basis for settlement. Unfortunately, I failed."
