The annual Wilding Shield and Nunneley Casket interprovincial -tennis matches will be played at Wellington to-day and to-morrow, and on the following Monday and Tuesday. Canterbury, Wellington and Auckland have each entered a men's and a women's team, and Wellington and Auckland will meet on the first two days. The winners of these matches will meet the teams from Canterbury. The teams are: — Wilding Shield.Canterbury: C. Angas, H. A. Barnett, W. R. Robinson and T. RhodesWilliams. Wellington: C. . Malfroy, D. G. France, N. R. C. Wilson and R. McL. Ferkins. Auckland: A. C. Stedman, N. G. Sturt, E. L. Bartleet and M. M. Morrison. Nunneley Casket. Canterbury: Miss D. Nicholls, Miss M. Wake, Miss T. Poole and Miss E. Rudkin. ' Wellington: Mrs. H. M. Dyl-ces, Miss D. Howe, Mrs. D. G. France and Miss M. Whyte. Auckland: Miss Marjorie Macfarlane, Miss B. Knight, Miss J. Ramsay, and Mrs. E. Napier. Auckland is represented by the same Wilding Shield team as a year ago, and, wliile its players are cap-
able* of brilliant play at times, there does not seem to be much chance of its beating Wellington.. Stedman, ' who played disappointingly last sea- ! son, seems to he nearer his best form j this year, but he was beaten by Mai- 1 froy in straight sets at New Plymouth ' on Saturday., As regards the other players, the advantage lies with Wel- j lington. Neither Sturt nor Bartleet ! is a player to he trifled with — the | latter is capable of extending anybody when in the right mood — but France | and Wilson are both' solid men. Morrison should be evenly matched when he meets McL. Ferkin. The Wellington team is decidedly impressive. Angas was Malfroy's master before the latter left for England, but it is hy no means certain that he is still in that position. But , he has been playing very fine tennis ! lately, and when it comes to a ques- I tion of fitness he should outlast Mai- j froy. Wilson was beaten by Barnett j a year ago, and there is no reason j why the Canterbury player should not do as well this year. France, on the other hand, found out how to heat . Barnett, and his tactics, if he can j repeat them, may be just as successful | again. A. L. France, regarded as a / fine match player, has dropped out this year, together with E. A. Rousell, and the fourth place in the Wellington side goes to McL. Ferkins. . The latter is said to have improved a good deal, but Rhodes-Williams only needs to strike one of his brilliant patches J to heat him. [ Canterbury's chances, therefore, are | reasonably good, and, with average luck, there is a sound chance of the Wilding Shield being brought baek to ] Christchurch. Angas and Barnett ' will not let their province down, Ro- , Milson, has yet to prove himself in interprovincial tennis, but is admittedly a sound player, and Rhodes-Wil-liams seems to have struck reliable form this season. It is a somewhat open question as to how the Nunneley Casket matches j will result, but Auckland has very 1 good chances. All of its four players are experienced. Wellington has lost Miss Nicholls, and this may make all the difference. Like Canterbury, it has introduced some new blood into its team. The Canterbury side may spring a surprise, but the chance of the "Nunneley Casket crossing Cook Strait this season is rather doubtful. Miss Nicholls was beaten by Mrs. Dykes at the Wellington championships, and if she should go down to the same ' player again Canterbury will not get very far. =1: * * Here is an old-timers record that will take some beating, P. E. Bean, who is 72 years of age, settled down to some solid tennis in the last weelc of 1932. He was out on the courts for five afternoons, and on each aftermmnplayedfivesets^HeMiada
