NOTABLE. SUCCESS WAIKATO CHALLENGE BANNER WON BY ROTORUA CLUB MEETING AT HAMILTON

Hamilton, Last night. An outstanding success was aehieved by the first representative team of the Rotorua Amateur Swimming Club which competed at the Hamilton Y.M.C.A. Amateur Swimming and Life Saving. Club's earnival to-night. The earnival was held at the Municipal baths, ten teams from Morrinsville, Te Awamutu, Hamilton, 'Rotorua, Matamata, Matangi, Cambridge, and Whitiora, competing. The Rotorua team which eomprised K. Whareaitu, W. Whareaitu, McRae, K. Aratema and Misses W. Pango and N. Worrall were accompanied on the trip by Messrs W. L. Richards (president)^ L. Fisher (club captain), L. H. Gresham (treasurer) and J. Perrin (coach) of the Rotorua Swimming Club. In all events in which the Rotorua swimmers started they were successful in gaining places and in most they won the events. Such was their success that they early captured the popularity of the spectators and at the conclusion of the meeting. an enthusiastic ovation was given them. For their suceeSs and particularly that of W. Whareaitu, great credit is due to the coach, Mr. J. Perrin, who in the short time since the formation of the club has been the means of the team making remarkable progress. In the main quest, the winning of the Waikato Challenge Relay Banner, the team were successful in securing possession of the trophy, and as a result the banner will now be held in Rotorua until such time as some challenger can wrest the trophy from the club at its own earnival. The raee for the banner was a fine one and only a few inches separated the winners from the Old Boys team which was second and the holders, Y.M.C.A. third. Excellent form was shown by W. Whareaitu, who won the 100 yards ehampionship and the 66 2-3 yards handicap, despite the fact that he was giving away big starts from most of the other competitors. In the junior events K. Aratema also did well to win two finals, and W. Pango won the third heat of the race for girls under 18 years but was unplaced in the final. After being placed second in the 33 1-3 yards ladies handicap, N. Worrall had the misfortune to stfain a hip, and had to retire from further competition. Following are the events won by Rotorua competitors : — Boys (under 14 years), K. Aratema. Boys (under 18 years) K. Aratema. Girls (under 18 years), W. Pango, third in heat. 33 1-3 yards ladies handicap: N. Worrall, second in heat. 100 Yards Championship (men) : W. Whareaitu. Time 61sec. 66 2-3 yards handicap: W. Whareaitu. Time 36 4-5see. Waikato Challenge Relay Banner: Rotorua 1/ Old Boys 2, Y.M.C.A. (holders) 3. Time 71sec.
