— By Telegrapii — Conyriglit).
Rec. January 8, 6.30 p.m. London, January 7. Advice has been reeeived that L'Atlantique is anehored in the roadstead at Cherbourg. A committee of 11 experts is proceeding to Cherbourg to investigate the fire. M. Meyer, Minister of Marine, states that metal in preference to wooden fittings will be employed wherever practicahle in future liners. Rumours are current that there has been trouble with L'Atlantique tugs. It is stated that the hawser of one of the tugs was deliberately cut, and another tug was ranuned. It has been established that the fire began in a cabin in whieh mattresses were stored. It is possible that a sailor dropped a cigarette spark. A steward saw smoke emerging from a crevice of the door. He opened it and a stifling cloud enveloped him and the alarm was given.
