BREAK FROM BRITAIN

COSGRAVE WANTS PEACE Rec. Jan. 9, 12.10 a.m. London, January 8. Aeroplanes figure prominently in the Irish campaign. The Republicans demands are clearly stated in their official newspaper: "We stand by the Irish people's proclamation in arms in 1916, whieh affinns the right of any body of Irishmen to become a nation free from subjection. We stand for breaking connection with the British Empire, and assert absolute unity and independence of the Irish Republic. We deny Britani's right to partition Ireland, and impose limitations on the Free State." The Government has suffered a fclow by the defection of Mr. W. R. Kent, who has now become a Farmcrs' League candidate, whieh suggests that the small farmers are withdrawing their support from Mr. de Valera. Mr. Cosgrave opening his campaign in Cork said: "Economists declare that separation has destroyed Ireland's chances of securing a trade treaty with Britain and enjoying the same privileges as Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The Government must make a peace honourable to Britain." Mr. Cosgrave said he would be prepared to continue tariffs on goods whieh yielded employment and a return of investment, and abandon merely restrictive duties. Unity between Northern and Southern Ireland would be accomplished only through good Government and economic statesmanship.
